07-11-05 Brigade Forces Overtime, Ties Gauchos 3-3

Bakersfield, Calif., July 11, 2005 - The Bakersfield Brigade dodged a bullet on Saturday, as the winless Gauchos took an early lead only to see it diminish in the final minutes of regulation play. In overtime, both teams pushed hard to score the winning goal. However neither team was able to record a score and at the end of the two 10 minute overtime periods, the score remained 3-3.

The Gauchos opened the scoring in the 10th minute of play with an unassisted goal by Forward Dustin Hammond. It didn’t take long for the Brigade to even the score as Johnny Carson scored his unassisted goal in the 23rd minute. The Brigade then caught the Gauchos “sleeping” and scored their 2nd goal inside a minute of Carson’s goal. Brigade Forward Lyle Martin found the back of the net, assisted by Kyle Gookins, taking the score 2-1 in the Brigade’s favor. However, the Gauchos bounced back quickly and tied the game with a score by defender Adam Kulpa. Finishing up the scoring in the first half, Gaucho forward Dustin Hammond scored his second of the night in the 29th minute giving San Diego a 3-2 halftime lead.

In the second half, San Diego struggled to find their game and recorded 10 additional fouls in the second half, nine more then what they had in the first half of the game. Additionally, they were unable to get off a clean shot on goal. Finally, in the 87th minute, Brigade defender Brian Walker put a shot in the back of the net to tie the score 3-3, eventually forcing the game into overtime play. Javier Cervantes recorded the assist on Walker’s goal. In overtime, neither team was able to score a goal and the game ended as a tie.

The Brigade’s next and last home game will be on July 23rd, 7:30 PM and Bakersfield Christian High School (corner of Stockdale Hwy and Allen Rd.) The Brigade will host the So. Cal Seahorses.
