Bakersfield, Calif., June 4, 2005 – BYU’s Trejo Matsumori scores in the 75th minute to win on the road in front of approximately 385 Brigade fans. “It’s a very disappointing loss as we gave up the goal on a set play,” stated Jeffrey Thorn Brigade owner. “Twelve of 18 goals scored against us this season have come from set plays . . . we need to improve in this area,” added Thorn.
This was the second meeting between the two teams who had previously dueled to a 1-1 tie on May 20th in Utah. Both teams are fighting to stay at “500” and in the middle of the current standings, within the PDL Southwest Division. “Our guys prepared well for this game against the Cougars,” said Brigade coach Gore. “BYU played us hard and got one in late for the win.”
The Brigade had an opportunity to score early in the second half as Brigade forward John Carson had a break away and charged the Cougars goal. The Cougars keeper however, came out of the box as John took the shot and got a hand on it to deflect it away from the net. The keeper then received a straight RED card as the referee call a hand ball on the keeper, as he had deflected the shot with his hand while being outside of the box. “If we had scored on that opportunity the momentum of the game would have changed and quite possibly could have changed the outcome of the game,” stated General Manager Joe Jimenez.
Penalties may have proved to be costly to the Brigade as they had 14 to BYU’s 9. Additionally, the Brigade only had 6 shots on goal as BYU had 11 respectively.
