06-04-05 Brigade’s Go Ahead Goal Cost Gauchos Their Keeper, Secures Win
Bakersfield, Calif., June 4, 2005 – In the 85th minute, Brigade’s Defender Brian Walker finishes on a “free kick” shot by Javier Cervantes which hit the right side post, landed on the far side where Walker was positioned, and eventually found the back of the net. As the Brigade worked their way back to center line Gauchos Keeper, Tim Edwards, argued the call with the referee which ended his night as he received a straight Red Card, for Abusive Language. This came at a very bad time for the Gauchos as they were forced to play the remaining five minutes, one man down.

“This game was very important for us to come away with a win, especially against San Diego,” said Gore. “We knew they were coming into this game with a lot of passion because they haven’t had their first win yet. They were looking for it hard.” With the win, the Brigade improved to 2-2-1 in season play and will host the BYU Cougars on June 11, who also improved to 2-2-1 with a win at home against Nevada Wonders on Friday night.

Brigade Forward, John Carson, opened the scoring with an early goal in the 16th minute of play, Leonid Sharf picked up the assist. “So far this season we’ve struggled to finish games and to finish opportunities, so it’s good to finally come through this game and put all that behind us and get a win,” said Carson. “It was a fortunate bounce we got, but that’s what it takes most of the time.”
The Gauchos went into the locker room down 1-0 at halftime but came out strong in the second half and tied the game with a goal by Jorge Macias in the 50th minute. “We were definitely looking for them to come out strong in the second have, and they did,” said General Manager Joe Jimenez. “When they scored 5 minutes into the second half I pretty much knew it was going to come down to the wire and to whichever team wanted it more.” But without a doubt, I knew our guys would prevail,” added Jimenez. “To come away with that win with all that pressure, that speaks a lot of character to this team right now,” Gore said. “We have a talented group. Hopefully, we can maintain our confidence going into next weekend.”
