05-20-05 Ashusrts' Head Preserves a Draw Against BYU Cougars
Salt Lake City, Utah  May 20, 2005… . . After traveling 11 hours by van a tired and wary Brigade team stepped onto the pitch determined to improve the performance of the last road game but came up a goal short of a road win.

The game started on a break away by Edgar Montero only to be denied by the BYU goalie.  “The ball was played over the top and I had a great opportunity but just didn’t finish.” Said Edgar.  “It was a tough, physical match,” Brigade coach Jay Gore said. “We had our chances but couldn’t capitalize. We played hard though and we’ll get those shots in the future.”

The Cougars out-shot the Brigade 18-10, including 10-2 in the second half and overtime. Fouls and yellow cards were called often as Bakersfield had 21 and four and BYU had 15 and two.
BYU scored first on a corner kick.  “We have given up 7-8 goals on set pieces” said Matt Barnes the Brigade Goalie coach.  “We have not done a good job on defending goals kicks and corner.  We will definitely work on set pieces next week” said Jay Gore.

Jason Ashurst of Bakersfield netted the equalizer in the 44th minute when he headed in a well-placed corner kick by John Carson.  Carson was named to the Team of the Week for his performance last week against Nevada Wonders.

Brigade play again on Saturday night May 28th at Bakersfield Christian High School.  They will host Orange County Blue Stars.
