Martin Signs Pro with USL-1 Vancouver Whitecaps

The Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced today the signing of free agent defender Lyle Martin.

Martin, 22, joins the Whitecaps after playing for the Bakersfield Brigade of the USL Premier Development League (PDL) the last two seasons. The 6’1”, 170-pound native of Bakersfield, California played in 16 matches last season, scoring nine goals and assisting on two for a total of 20 points. In his first year with Bakersfield, he played in 10 matches, scored five goals and set-up another for 11 points.

In his collegiate career, Martin was a versatile player at California State University, playing in 79 career games while scoring 29 goals. In his senior year, Martin earned the 2006 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) goal-scoring title with 17 goals in 19 matches, which also ties for the second most-single season goals in school history. As a sophomore in 2004, he led his team with four game-winning goals and earned honourable mention for All-CCAA honours. In 2003, he played in all 18 matches in his first season for California State. Martin was selected by Chivas USA in the Major League Soccer Supplemental Draft last January.

The Bakersfield Brigade Soccer Club Franchise is a PDL team, playing within the United Soccer Leagues’ PDL Southwestern Conference which is made up of ten teams throughout California. League play begins in April and goes through July 2007.
